4 Great Books for Youth Basketball Coaches
There is an endless supply of information out there for basketball players and coaches to consume, but you only have a finite amount of time to consume it. With the Hustle App, we break our basketball information into bite size drills and premium practice plans that fit into your schedule at a great price. But for those times when you want more in depth details and knowledge, there are some excellent books out there for basketball coaching.
To fit them into your busy schedule, I’ve found that audiobooks are the key to finding time. I can listen to audiobooks while driving, walking the dog, or running on the treadmill. We asked a few of our coaches at Hustle for recommendations on their favorite basketball audiobooks. Check a couple of them out below.
Calipari shares his philosophy for focusing on his players - learning what they need to get the most out of themselves and each other. It’s also very interesting to learn about how Calipari recruits players, most of them expecting to play college ball for only one year before leaving for the NBA. He talks about how he builds relationships with his players, focusing on honesty and always keeping his promises to them.
In this book, Coach Smith reflects on his career by highlighting some of the most important games, players, teams, strategies that he used. This book is filled with basketball, but touches on many of the things we sometimes forget - that there’s more to life than just basketball.
Athletes at every level across every sport want to find that edge to excel. In this book, you learn the same advice from Sports Psychologist Jim Afremow that he shares with olympians, professional athletes, and amateurs. He teaches techniques for getting you and your players “in the zone” to turn on peak performance at the moment you need it.
Furious George: My Forty Years Surviving NBA Divas, Clueless GMs, and Poor Shot Selection by George Karl
George Karl is known as one of the most outspoken and combative coaches in NBA history, but also one of the winningest. He is full of stories of life coaching NBA players and teams, and he’s not shy to share some of the dark sides of the coaching world as well. He also talks about the resilience needed to keep battling back from his three bouts with cancer.
With so much great basketball information out there, it’s hard to find the time to consume it all. With the Hustle App, we make it easy to break up the info into quick and easy drills that you can check out while you’re at the gym. Audiobooks are best for when you want to go a little more in depth. Enjoy these four great books!
